根据Matsui(2000)的定义,桥接是一种语境推理,其先行项未被明确提到,指称对象的存在是通过上文中明示的内容推理而得到。定冠词the的桥接作用是其指称作用的一种,它可分为三类,其推理机制可从认知和关联的角度得到解释。文章着重从可及性和可接受性两个方面讨论了桥接的合适性。桥接指称语和先行语之间的关系既是语义的,也是语用的,其指称对象可以是一个或多个,可以是具体或抽象事物。当有两个或多个潜在先行语时,语法上可及性最大的先行语在意义上应是最佳关联的。熟知性和唯一性是the的桥接作用合适性的简化标准。
