Based on the analysis on the papers published in Journal of Higher Education (2001--2010), it finds that the discourse is dominated by men in higher education research. Women are under-represented, disadvantaged, and there is a progressive decline in the representation of women at each stage of the academic ladder. The status of women in academic community is mostly decided by academic performance according to the universalism principle. However, such factors as the gender stereotype, the given male model of academia, the cumulative disadvantage effect, the championship of academic competition, and over-loaded responsibilities for family, make women more difficult to be successful.
