摘要
阿诺德在《多佛海滩》中三次使用典故,只有从互文性角度才能解其深意。断崖意味着诗人新生的开始,同时将手足相残的主题烙入全诗底层;索福克勒斯的哀曲传达着阿诺德斯多葛主义的共鸣,而夜战则综合了人生转折、手足相残、思想混战等因素。阿诺德以手足之情为基点,在文化关切之轴上大而化之为对人性的忧思,寄托了他对人类前途命运的深切关怀。
Arnold's "Dover Beach" alludes classically three times, which calls for a further intertexual reading. The cliff symbolizes a new start for the poet, incorporating hereafter a motif of fraternal killing into the poem. Sophocles' sad note finds vent to Arnold's stoicism, while the night battle involves elements of life's turning point, fraternal killing and clashing thoughts. Arnold starts from the point of fraternity, amplifies his thought of humanity along with the axis of Culture, and eventually lands himself upon a deep concern with human prosperity and destiny.
