摘要
在19世纪的英国,以(社会)转型焦虑为主要内涵的文化概念已经确立。这种焦虑其实就意味着变革。就转型焦虑而言,莫里斯跟卡莱尔、阿诺德、金斯利和罗斯金等人没有太大的差异,但是就变革的性质、方向和道路而言,莫里斯的思考更成熟、更深刻。在莫里斯描绘的理想蓝图中,艺术就是生活的气韵和命脉。通过艺术地生活,人的生命可以从劳动的愉悦中获得意义,可以融入过去与未来,融入社会和大自然,也就可以实现超越,融入无限——这就是莫里斯对于文化命题的答题。
The 19th century Britain witnessed the establishment of the concept of culture with the anxiety over social transition,which implies social reforms,as its main intension.In so far as the anxiety over social transition,Morris hardly differs from Carlyle,Arnold,Kingsley and Ruskin.With regards to the nature,the orientation and the path of reforms,Morris＇s thoughts are more matured and more profound.Art constitutes the breath and pulse of life in the blueprints drawn by Morris.Living artistically,man can and should derive the meaning of life from the pleasure of creative labour,and from the fusion of the past and the future,of society and nature,so as to transcend and fuse into the infinite—in all this lies Morris＇s response to the proposition of culture.
