Objectives: To analyze the effects of marital status on negative affect in elderly. Methods: The two indices of "do you often feel fearful or anxious" and "do you often feel lonely and isolated" were used to assess the negative affect. Utilizing the data from 2002 and 2005 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), and controlling demographic, economic, and physical factors, the related factors, such as the shock of widowing or remarrying event, of negative affect were analyzed by means of logistic static and dynamic models. Results: Regression models showed that the risks of negative affect for widows and widowers were 6. 2% and 4.7% higher than that of married women and men. The event of being widowed would let the risk of negative affect for men and women increase by 8. 2% and 11.3%, respectively, in the coming three years. The event of remarriage had no significant effect on the risk of negative affect of elderly. Conclusion: Marital status has significant effects on the negative affect in elderly. Death of a spouse may increase the risk of negative affect, and remarriage may have no significant effect on improvement of negative affect
