The theme of "spiritual isolation" in Carson McCullers's works bears a strong relevance to the writer's definition of Southern American identity,of which religion constitutes an essential element. As McCullers claims, writing,to her,is a continuous process of seeking God's presence;meanwhile,in her novels,"freakishness" seems a barometer of the certainty brought about by God's absence/presence.Thus,it is the aim of this article to reveal the religious implications of McCullers's hallmark theme of "spiritual isolation" through a close study of her portrayal of "freakish" Christ images in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and the text's religious irony implied in the parallel forces of construction and deconstruction.
