"A Streetcar Named Desire" written by Tennessee Williams and "A Rose for Emily" written by William o Faulkner are two masterpieces. The two heroines, Blanche and Emily, end in a tragic way in the works. Although one is a play and the other is a short fiction, the two heroines in the works embody a few of differences and similarities. From the perspective of the times they live in, both are declining aristocrats. Though they live in times of rapid changes, they are too conservative to accept new things, and eventually become a victim of a patriarchal society. From the personal factors, both of them suffer a variety of family misfortune, so they take different measures to evade the reality and live in the former spiritual home of the Southern aristocrats.
