Objective To provide an image basis for the effect and specificity of acupuncture by investigating the effect of qi-tonifying,blood-regulating and constitution-strengthening acupuncture points on cerebral glucose metabolism in healthy elderly persons. Methods Ten healthy elderly persons were randomly allocated to acupoint and non-acupoint groups. In the acupoint group selected were points Danzhong(CV 17),Zhongwan(CV12),Qihai(CV6),Xuehai(SP10),Waiguan(TE5) and Zusanli(ST36) and in the non-acupoint group,non-meridian points beside the above acupoints.Acupuncture research was made once daily,5 times a week, for 8 consecutive weeks.Positron emission tomography(PET) was performed for brain function imaging in all the persons before and after 8 weeks of treatment. The characteristics of changes in glucose metabolism in a brain region of interest were observed before and after acupuncture. Results After 8 weeks of treatment, glucose metabolism in bilateral frontal lobes and hippocampal regions increased significantly in the acupoint group(P0.05) and did not change significantly in the non-acupoint group as compared with before acupuncture. After 8 weeks of treatment, glucose metabolism in bilateral frontal lobes and hippocampal regions was significantly higher in the acupoint group than in the non-acupoint group(P0.05).Conclusions Qi-tonifying,blood-regulating and constitution-strengthening acupuncture points can increase glucose metabolism in cognitive regions of the brain in healthy elderly persons and have marked acupoint specificity.
