To understand the effects of helminthiasis on intelligence quotient(IQ) of school age children.Some puplis from one center school which located in Nanghui County of Shanghai suburb were included in this study for three years.Fecal samples from children aged 6 to 9 in beginning year were examined with method of Kato Katz for the prevalence of infection and eggs were counted to determine degrees of infectious burden.Therapy was given to the helmintihasis.Combined Raven′s Test wass also persormed,and IQ was calculated according to countryside model.The results showed he prevalence of helminthiasis in 1995 was 49.53%,in 1996 weas 50.82 and in 1997 was 15.93%.Only eggs of ascaris and trichuris were found in all fecal samples.The prevalence of ascaris was lower then that of trichuris significantly in three years.There were no significantly different prevalene of helminthiasis between different sex.Heavy infetion was not found in the all samples.The proportion of persons with middkle infection of ascaris and trichuris was about 2/3.The intelligence test gave the means IQ 95.46,95.48,103.15 respectively for three years.Analysis of the effect of parasitic infection on IQ showed there was no significantly different IQ means between persons with and without parasitic,ascaris or trichuris infection,and different burden of ascaris and trichuris.The conclusion could be reached that in Shanghai area effects of parasitic infection on IQ of school age children was not seen.
