Cognitive linguistics holds that meaning contains not only what is denoted but also what is conceptualized in the cognitive process. This paper provides an analysis of the semantic structure of the Japanese give-and-receive verbs yaru, kureru and morau, which belong to cognitive model I,from a cognitive linguistics viewpoint. It shows that the differences in the semantic structure are also reflected in the syntactic structure. The reason for the three-way classification of Japanese give-and-receive verbs is that the conceptualizer is included in the event and functions as an EXPERIENCER.The fact that there are and only are three different combinations between EXPERIENCER,AGENT and RECIPIENT is accountable for three-way classification of the Japanese give-and-receive verbs.
