Lhasa street songs of the first-half of the 20th century are a type of non-mainstream oral literature, but contain the essentials of literature, for example, their unique sentence and paragraph patterns, rhyme and forms of expression. The language of the songs is full of humor as well as sarcastic, simple and vivid. The features of the songs, however, cause difficulties for translators. Through the analysis of the methods used by the famous American Tibetologist, Melvyn Co Goldstein in translating the street songs in his works, the means and difficulties might be able to be derived to a degree.
