In Kate Chopin's 'D sir e's Baby',there is a nameless woman who hardly attracts readers' attention. She never presents herself in the scene of the story, and the author's mentioning her seems only to enhance the dramatics of the ending of the story. But if it is read in a new perspective, this nameless woman can become a key figure who plays an important role of subversion. In a sense, she subverts the whole story and adds to it some unexpected meaning; above all, she subverts L'Abri, the life of her beloved son, and the dominant power relations in American society. The subversive power she has derives from the distorted race-gender situation of the time. Thus it is important to historically contextualize the story in order to reach a more insightful understanding of its meaning.
