This paper attempts to analyze a face-threatening act in the conversational conflict excerpt in E. M. Foster's A Passage to India by using the theory of turn-taking, together with theories of pragmatics and social linguistics. The analysis interprets the dynamic balance of power relations between the main characters, their characterization andthe main causes for the conversational conflict, i.e. the background of colonialism and different social identity of the characters. It further proves that elaboration of literary works based on conversational theories can make literary criticism more objective.
