赫德认为郭嵩焘有学问,有能力,性情温和,头脑清醒。郭嵩焘认为赫德为中国办事十分出力,极有心计。双方关系是友好合作的。赫德认为马格里是李鸿章的人,力求将马格里挤出公使馆,因为郭嵩焘与李鸿章关系密切未能如愿。
The historical futures of Hyde （1835-1911）, an English scholar and Guo Song-tao （1818-1891） were learned men who were of competence, peaceful temperaments and always keeping cool heads. Guo Song-tao thought that Hyde made great contribution to his official work for China and the bilateral relations is friendly and cooperative. Hyde thought that the official Mageni belonged to imperial minister Li Hong-zhang and Hyde tried his best to drive Mageni out of the embassy. However, he did in vain because Guo and Li Hong-zhang were close friends.
