The effect of starvation on the growth and oxygen consumption rate of juvenile takifugu rubripes (181.75 ±17.21 g and 17.84 ±0.44 cm) starved for 0-40 d were studied under different temperatures(6 ℃, 10 ℃, 14 ℃, 18 ℃ and 22 ℃). Results of the present study indicated that starvation for 0-40 d had no significant effect on the survival rate of takifugu rubripes at 10- 18 ℃, the survival rate being 100 % after starvation for 40 d. However, there were no fish surviving at 6 ℃ and 22 ℃ after 32 d and 36 d starvation, respectively. At the same temperature, the rate of weight loss decreased with the starvation time, while the opposite occurred for the oxygen consumption rate. Within the same period of starvation, the rate of weight loss increased with increasing temperature, and the same trend was found for the oxygen consumption rate. Meanwhile, the diel variation of oxygen consumption rate was obvious. At 07:00 and 15:00, the oxygen consumption rate was the highest while the lowest values were reached at 03:00. Starvation and temperature showed significant difference in their influence on the rate of weight loss, condition factor and oxygen consumption rate (P 〈 0.05). The oxygen consumption rate obviously deceased after starvation for 10-20 d, then tended to be stable with starvation for 20 -40 d, indicating that the oxygen consumption rate of takifugu rubripes showed a staged variation during starvation.
