Forty three elderly hypertensive patients were randomly assigned to exercises group or control group, Both were under nitrendipine regimen. The patients of exereise group took extra physical exercises for 3 months, with significant decreases in serum cholesterol, triglycerid, low density lipoprotein and cholesterol. Insulin levels were also lowered, 1 hour and 2 hour after glucose loading(P<0 05). The high density lipoprotein cholesterol was increased in exercise group as compared with the control group(P<0 05). Blood presure was lowered in both groups, but the doses of antihypertensive agent were decreased in exercises group as compared to the control group(P<0 05). It is concluded that regular physical exercises can decrease the insulin levels of fasting and after glucose loading, and facilitate the control of lipidmetabolism and decrease the blood pressure in elderly hypertensives.
