Biological invasions are serious socioeconomic and environmental problems worldwide. It is very significant in theory and practice to explore invasion mechanisms. Tradeoffs between growth and defenses have been documented in many studies. Realloeation of resources from defenses to growth may improve competitive ability of Jurasire plants. However, the intrinsie mechanisms underlying the increased competitive ability of invasive plants are not elucidated. The hypothesis of the evolution of nitrogen allocation predicts that alien plants may evolve to decrease nitrogen allocation to defenses and increase nitrogen allocation to photosynthesis in responses to enemy release in introduced ranges. The increased nitrogen allocation to photosynthesis contributes to increased resource capture ability and use efficiency, facilitating invasion success.
