In PET/CT imaging, patient respiratory motion can cause significant artifacts in thoracic and upper abdomen area. Respiratory motion artifacts substantially degrade PET images and increase the apparent volume of malignant lesions, result in reduced activity and signal-to-noise ratios within the tumor region, therefore often lead to inaccurate diagnoses and treatment planning for tumors within thoracic and abdomen. Respiratory motion compensation in PET/CT imaging has been an important research area in the past decade. This paper presents a review of the existing methods applied to compensate the respiratory motion and suppress motion artifacts in PET/CT imaging. Typical respiratory gate or synchronization techniques, registration-based algorithms, raw data or reconstruction-based algorithms and deconvolution-based algorithms were introduced and compared respectively. Finally a summary and several promising approaches could be employed to correct the respiratory motion artifacts were given.
