Hypertensive disorder complicating pregnancy (HDCP) is a major cause of maternal and pefinatal mortality, especially in developing countries. Its etiology involves multiple factors, but no specific cause has been identified. Evidence suggests that HDCP has a number of pathophysiological characteristics including endothelial cell dysfunction, an anti-angiogenic state, intravascular inflammation. Interferon (IFN)-γ inducible protein, CX- CL10/IP-10, is a member of the CXC chemokine family with proinflammatory and anti-angiogenic properties. This chemokine has been proposed to be a key link between inflammation and angiogenesis. We propose that IP-10 is involved in the pathophysiology of HDCP because this condition is characterized by intravascular inflammation and an anti-angiogenic state. The present article analyses and reviews the roles of IP-10 in the etiology of HDCP
