摘要
我国近年来有越来越多的学者研究华裔美国文学作品。由于中国文化是华裔美国移民者的母国文化,我们自然对这些作品中所体现出的文化比较敏感,因而更易将注意力集中在中国文化在这些作品中如何得以表现这一方面。然而,笔者选取三位有代表性的当代华裔美国作家徐忠雄(Shawn Wong)、伍慧明(Fae Myenne Ng)、梁志英(Russell Leong),通过对他们发表于90年代、有影响力的三部作品进行解读,发现这三位作家都不约而同地表达了一种观点:真正的中国文化传统在华裔美国的文化历史中已消失,留下的只是一些抽象的符号,而取而代之的是一种华裔美国文化。
The subtle and complicated linkage between Chinese and Chinese American culture, however, may render some Chinese scholars liable to conduct a simplified cultural comparison in terms of representation/misrepresentation of Chinese cultural tradition at the cost of richness of literary study. Through a careful study of three recent literary works by the largely recognized writers, Shawn Wong, Fae Myenne Ng and Russell Leong, I find that they unanimously invent a metaphor of death of their Chinese parents to signify the absence of authentic Chinese cultural tradition in Chinese American culture. Remembered simply as fragmentary abstract cultural symbols, the Chinese cultural tradition has been substituted by Chinese American culture.
