The methylation and the isopropylation of naphthalene over Hβ zeolite were studied in a small fixedbed reactor. The results showed that the alkylating agents had important effects on the alkylation reaction, such as naphthalene conversion, product composition and coke deposit over Hβ. When iPrOH was used as the alkylating agent instead of MeOH, Hβ zeolite exhibited higher activity and selectivity for 2,6dialkylnaphthalene in the gasphase alkylation of naphthalene. The reaction temperature could decrease from 300℃ to 200℃, which was favorable for selecting the solvent and decreasing the coke deposit during the reaction. The shapeselective effect was attributed to the steric hindrance of Hβ for isopropyl groups.
