摘要
自中世纪大学产生以来,在历经欧洲中世纪、民族国家形成时期以及现代社会这三个重要历史阶段的过程中,西方大学根据自身在不同历史阶段面临的内、外部环境的变化,不断调整自身使命,经历较长时期的发展演变后,至今已形成了多样化的使命系统。西方大学使命的变迁主要产生了两方面的历史影响:第一,西方大学使命的每一次演变、发展和创新,都在相当程度上化解了大学在历史上遭遇的种种危机,激发了大学的活力,推动了大学从社会的边缘走向社会的中心,逐步确立了大学在人类文明进步中的重要作用和地位。第二,西方大学使命变迁形成的多样化的大学使命系统为当今认识和处理大学面临的问题提供了丰富的思想资源,深刻地影响了人们思维和言说大学的方式,而人们的这种思维和言说方式又反过来对大学的发展方向产生深刻的影响。
Since the birth in the Middle Ages, western universities have gone through three important historical stages: the Middle Ages, the formation period of national states, and the modern society. Subject to the changes of their internal and external environments, western universities have developed a variety of missions. The changes of western universities’ missions resulted in two major historical consequences. First, every evolvement, development or innovation of western universities’ missions helped solve various crises that they encountered, improved their vitality, and made them come from the edge of society to the center, which, therefore, helped establish their privileged status in the advancement of human civilization. Second, a diversified mission system of western universities arising from a long changing history provided us with rich ideological resources to identify and cope with what we are facing today. This has profoundly affected the way how people think and talk about universities, which, in turn, produced profound effects on the development of universities.
