As outstanding representatives of seclusion literature in the history of classical Chinese and Japanese literature, both Tao Yuan-ming and Rabbi Xi Xing created large quantities of poems in their secluded life. They shared the similarity in that both of them lived in times of disorder, but they differed in their motives for leading a secluded life. Tao Yuan-ming and other Chinese hermits were mostly for political reasons, while Rabbi Xi Xing and other Japanese hermits mostly out of religious reasons.
