Hepatic failure (HF) is the common end-results of all the grave liver diseases. It is important to accurately evaluate the severity of HF for the selection of therapeutic regimen. Although Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) has been used for more than 30 years, it is proved to have some shortage. The model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) is a new method to predict the pathogenetic condition of the end-stage liver disease in recent years. This article reviews MELD about its characters and clinical applications mainly.
