Crested Ibis (Nipponia nippon) is one of the endangered species in the world and ranks as the first class of national key protected animal in China. Till now, there is only one wild population in the world, which is distributed in Yang county and nearby areas of Shaanxi province. Since the re-discovery of wild population of Crested Ibis in China in 1981, the in-situ conservation work has made a great progress. The wild population has been increased from seven to more than 600 birds. In this paper, the current nest distribution is summarized and the variations of vegetation, elevation and nesting tree species were analyzed base on the survey in breeding seasons from 1999 to 2007. The results indicate that there are 42% of nests distributed outside the Crested Ibis National Nature Reserve. The vegetation around nest sites shows a significant difference between plain areas and mountains. In 2007, about 49% Crested Ibis breeding pairs nested in lower mountain areas with elevation from 600 m to 700 m, and the average breeding elevation was (698±156) m (Mean±S.D) and there is no significant relation between breeding success and elevation(R=0.121, R^2=0.015, F=1.488, P=0.225). With the increase of wild population, the breeding area was dispersed, the breeding elevation was declined and the nesting-tree species appeared diversified. Based on the results, this paper discusses the reason of changing breeding ecology and makes suggestions for the Crested Ibis conservation in the future.
