Chiral complexes prepared in situ from cinchona alkaloids and metal salts were applied to the catalytic asymmetric reduction of acetophenone for the first time. The results of using chiral complexes were much better than that of using chiral ligands. Effect of chiral complexes prepared from chiral ligands and various metal salts and effect of different catalyst compositions on reaction were also examined. The highest ee value of 1 phenylethanol was 61% under suitable reaction conditions.
