The modern Moro separatism is deeply influenced by American colonial rule on Moro in Southern Philippines. The then American rule underwent several characteristic stages with gradual and consistent adjustment. American colonizers made use of Datus to practice their administration over the area. Meanwhile, Datus grew stronger, economically and politically, on their domain .with the help of American colonizers. In that period, Datus dangled between two choices - cooperation with or rebellion against American colonizers. Their final choices usually depended on their power and the then political situation in Philippines. Sometimes, the division between cooperation and resistance is vague and blurring. The American colonizers finally unified Moro and Christian Filipinos under their administration, but did not eliminate their mutual prejudice and hostility, which laid groundwork for today's modern Moro separatism.
