118 non-English majors were administered into a battery of phonological processing tasks, vocabulary size and reading comprehension tests for the purpose of examining the possible effects of English phonological processing ability on vocabulary size and passage reading comprehension. The results indicate that English phonological awareness, pseudo-word reading and auditory verbal working memory are significantly correlated to vocabulary size and passage reading comprehension. Vocabulary size and auditory verbal working memory are found to be two direct predictors affecting passage reading comprehension, while the influence of phonological awareness and pseudo-word reading to vocabulary size and passage reading comprehension is indirect and must be via auditory verbal working memory. Finally, applications to the teaching for non-English majors are discussed.
