This article analyses faunal remains from the mid -Yangshao site of Xipo in Lingbao, Henan in the 2000 and 2001 excavations. It attempts to reconstruct environmental conditions and subsistence economy in the region. The result indicates that domestic animals, instead of wild ones, became the major sources of meat consumption in the mid -Yangshao culture. This marked change coincided with the dramatic increase in population size and density in this period. It is necessary to further investigate the causes using multi -discipline approaches.
