The Tung-chuang and Hsi-wang Villages are both located on the first terrace on thenorth bank of the Yellow River in Jui-cheng County, Shansi Province. Lying at a distanceof 22 kilometres to the east of the Hsi-wang Village, the site of the Tung-chuang Villageextends over an area of about 120,000 square metres around the modern village from whichit derives its name. The excavations were conducted in May and June of 1958 over an areaof about 1,180 square metres. The Hsi-wang Vilage site lies to the southwest of the modernvillage and covers an area of about 100,000 square metres. The excavations were carried outfrom May through July in 1960 over an area of about 385 square metres. Most of the cultural remains unearthed at the Tung-chuang Village belong to the Panpotype of the Yangshao Culture. The remains of the Hsiwang Village represent chiefly theYangshao and Lungshan Cultures. The Yangshao remains may be further divided into twostages with the earlier one representing the Miao-ti-kou type and the later one bearing aclose resemblance to the later stage of the Panpo remains. Some of the characteristics ofthe Lungshan remains seem to suggest that they probably belong to the Miao-ti-kou ⅡCulture. The late Yangshao remains and the Lungshan remains uncarthed at the Hsi-wang Vil-lage site are characterized by a number of commom features, such as the presence of thetrellis design, the basket design and the cord impression, as well as the predominence of theapplique decoration and the striking resemblance between the shapes of the kuan-vase, weng-vase and the pointed-bottom vase. The authors subscribe, therefore, to the view that theLungshan Culture of southwest Shansi and adjacent regions was probably derived from theYangshao Culture. Excavations conducted at the two sites have shed much new light on the Neolithic cul-tures of this region. In addition, the stratigraphical evidence brought to light at the Hsi-wang Village site has provided an important basis for the periodization of the YangshaoCulture.
