摘要
严复是中国近代一位杰出的翻译大师,一生译述过多种西方社会学、经济学、名学(逻辑学)、法学、政治学等作品。但几乎没有学者注意到严复也是一个英语教学的杰出探索者,曾编纂过重要的英文文法书《英文汉诂》。本文通过对《英文汉诂》的内容和特点的分析,并将该书与《英吉利文话之凡例》和《英文举隅》比较,阐明了《英文汉诂》在晚清英语文法教学史上的重要意义,指出了严复在英语教育史上的特殊地位与贡献。
Julin Khedau Yen-Fuh is a great translator in Chinese modem history. He translated many learned works about Western sociology, economics, logic, law, politics, etc. But hardly has any scholar noticed that Yan-Fuh is also a great pioneer in English education. He edited the textbook English Grammar Annotated in Chinese. Based on an analysis of the textbook and the characteristics of the translation within it, this paper compares it with A Common School Book of the English language, for the Use of the Anglo-Chinese College and Grammar of the English language, and explains the significance of the textbook in the history of English grammar education in the late Qing. It also points out that Yen-Fuh enjoys a special position in the history of English education.
