Objective To investigate the loneliness among children in the rural area and its influencing factors. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in two rural primary schools, which contain 882 children (male 472, female 410) by the cluster sampling methods based on the Children's Loneliness Scale (CLS). Results The prevalence of loneliness from the grade 3 to 6 primary school students was 17.1%, 15.7 % for male and 18.8 % for female. Loneliness status had a downtrend with grades. Univariable analysis indicated that age, grade, health status, educational methods of teachers, fathers, mothers and other family members were statistically significant. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that influencing factors of sex, grade, health status, problems in learning, educational methods of fathers were also statistically significant. Conclusions The degrees and frequencies of loneliness among children in the rural area are intense and high. Society, schools and parents should provide correct educational methods to help children.
