The significance of the forming of the pre-bake cell skull for aluminum electrolysis is expounded, The formation of the skull at high molecular ratios (sodium fluorides vs aluminum fluorides) and high temperatures in 240 kA cells as well as the maintenance and practical use of the skull at low temperatures and molecular ratios are discussed.
