当代美国印第安女作家莱斯利.西尔科的长篇小说《典礼》中的文化身份问题是印第安作家关注的共同主题。西尔科结合文化身份的“特性”与“建构”之双重含义,探讨了复兴民族传统和重构文化身份的问题,通过主人公治疗精神创伤、回归部落文明和重温部落仪式的经历,揭示了弘扬民族文化传统对于身份探求的重要性。作品为现代化进程中的印第安种族指出生存的必由之路,即维护族裔文化,回归部落传统,正视社会现实。
Cultural identity in Leslie Marmon Silko＇s novel Ceremony represented a common concern of contemporary American Indian writers. Silko highlighted the renewal and reconstruction of ethnic tradition and cultural identity for native Americans by examining the characteristic and constructive meaning of the identity concept. She stressed the imperative of maintaining ethnic tradition in identity quest by way of spiritual healing, cultural rejuvenation, and ritual experience. The novel demonstrated that the way for the Indians in the modernization is to protect national culture, return to the tribe tradition and face the social reality.
