The analysis of saikosaponin contents in 10 species of Radix Bupleuri from 8 provinces in China by HPLC showed that the contents of saikosaponin a and d in Bupleurun spp. from Ninxia were higher than those from other localities significantly. The determination of saikosaponin contents in 7 species of Herba Bupleuri from 6 provinces by TLC showed that no saikosaponin a and d contents were appeared in samples analysed except saikosaponin a of trace, d of micro content in B. angustissimun from Nei Monggol and trace content of d in B. commelynoideum var. flaviflorum from Ningxia.
