After its spread to Japan, the philosophy of Zhu Xi was involved in various intellectual trends such as the merging and splitting of Shintoism and Confucianism and the establishment of Shintoism as an independent entity. It was alternately made use of, challenged and rejected. The process highlighted the eagerness of Japanese scholars in the Edo period to establish an independent“Dao Tong,”and to get rid of Chinese influences. The process also directly or indirectly affected, or even determined, Japanese scholars' interpretation of the philosophy of Zhu Xi in modern times. Understanding these developments can help us understand the fate of Zhu Xi's philosophy in Japan and grasp the essence behind its modern manifestations.
