Cationic starch is prepared by an essentially pollution free method wherein starch(for example corn starch, canna edulis ker starch or cassara starch) is reacted with a mixture of 3 chloro 2 hydroxy propyl trimethy lammonium chloride and alkali catalyst under substantially dry reaction conditions. Moreover, this paper studies the effects of several factors(different catalysts, reaction temperature and reaction time) on the degree of substitution and reaction efficiency. The resultant cationic starch finds particular use in paper making.
