The Nanzhong (南中) referred a specific region in Xinanyi (西南夷) areas from the Han (汉) to Jin (晋). Its geographical ranges included the present Yunan, a majority of Guizhou and part of the southwestern areas of Sichuang. The Huayangguo Zhi (华阳国志) said, ' The past Nanzhong was probably the region where the Yi and Yue peoples have been living.' That is a key with which we can discovery the ethnic system of the peoples living there. This paper explores the problem how to discriminate between the two ethnic systems Yi and Yue and the change of their title after the Eastern Han (东汉) Dynasty. The author argues that the conclusion that the Nanzhong was the region where the Yi and Yue peoples is tenable. The Tibeto-Burman peoples was called as Yi and Bai-Yue (百越, hundred Yues) peoples were called as Yue, Pu (濮) or Liao (獠). And according to the Archaeological resources, the paper figures that the pattern that the basic inhabitant was Yi and Yue people in Yunnan areas has formed in Neolithic age at the latest.
