Objective To study the effect of pouring hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) blood into carotid arteries in treatment of severe head injury. Methods A total of 22 cases with severe head injury were treated with pouring HBO blood into carotid arteries about 3.5 days after head injury. In the meantime, an observation was done on PbtO2, PbtCO2 and pHbt values before, during and after the treatment as well as Glascow coma scale (GOS) three month after injury. Results After pouring hyperbaric oxygenation blood into carotid arteries, PbtO2 was elevated ( P 〈 0.05 ). Compared with control, PbtO2 was elevated and GOS improved three months after injury ( P 〈 0.05 ). Conclusion Pouring hyperbaric oxygenation blood into carotid arteries plays an active and important role in early treatment of severe head injury.
