Evidence for the existence of a conjugated state of zearalenone (ZEN )in higher plant was reported. When a sample was extracted twice with ethyl acetate and the presence of ZEN in both water-phase and ethyl acetutephase was tested by solid-Phase radioimmunoassay (SPRIA ) technique, it was found that ZEN existed in both the aqueous phase and the organic phase and that its content in waterphase decreased progressively during germination (Fig. 1 ). Since the free ZEN molecule is known to be insoluble (or slightly soluble ) in water, the ZEN found in the aqueous phase must be some combined form of it. Byanalysis of SPRIA and MS, ZEN wasfound in the ethyl acetate extract ofthe water phase which had been subjected to the action of β-D-glucosidase(Fig. 2), but not in that of the waterphase without being subjected to theaction of the enzyme. The results indicated that ZEN might form a glucoside with D-glucose in hisher plants.This research strongly suggested thatZEN, as other plant hormones, existedin both free and bound or conjugatedstate and normal growth and development of plants would be regulated byits conversion from one to another.
