he East cave is about 2 km from the famous Locality I (Homo erectus pekinensis site) of Zhoukoudian, Beijing. Its sediments consist of the cave-fissure gravel, sand and clay beds, and are lithologically divided into 13 beds. During 1992 to 1993, the first author collected a number of mammal fossils from the deposits of the East cave, especially the bed 7 and bed 8 of this section. The remains are identified 29 species belonging to 23 genera of Rodentla, Lagomorpha, Insectivora, Carnivora and Artiodactyla. They mainly are Alilepus zhoukoudianensis sp. nov., Sciurotamias praecox, Allocricetus ehiki, A. ? teilhardi, Cricetinus varians, Hyperacrius yenshanensis, Allophaiomys of. pliocaenicus, Proedromys of. bedfordi, Apodemus dominans, Niviventer preconfucianus, Chardinomys nihewanicus and so on.All of these fossil mammals are the important members in the Early Pleistocene in China. They show that the East cave deposits formed in the Early Pleistocene. The magnetic polarity section of the East cave was given by Cao Boxun(1989). By correlation with E. A. Mankinen's (1979) magnetic polarity time scale it suggests that the East cave deposits cover from the Olduvial event (1. 67 Ma B. P. ) to the Jaramillo event (0. 97 Ma B. P. ) in age. Therefore the Taipingshan Formation may be correlated with the Loc. 12. Both of them belong to middle Early Pleistocene in age.
