Square tells stories of Li Mingjun-his experiences in North and South Korea. The frustrations he meets with illustrate the conflict of different conceptions that has caused great suffering to the people. Li Mingjun attempts to explore a third path superior to both political systems of the North and South Korea and ends in a total tragedy. His explorations reflect a beautiful dream of a harmonious coexistence of ″square″ and ″sanctum.″ Consequently, his theme centers on the criticism on the conception that destroys man's dignity and pursuit of happiness. The writer highly praises the power of love that gives man hope in spite of his descriptions of tragic outlook on life. There is no denying that love and conception make a perfect combination in this book.
