EF (ecological footprint) is a set of quantitative indicators based on land area. It is a measure of measuring sustainability, evaluating the effect of human activities on the global ecosystem by quantifying the biologically productive area necessary to maintain human survival. We used this model to estimate and interpret EF of Wutongqiao District of Leshan City in 2003. ased on the estimation, balance between supply and demand, the structure of supply and demand and the efficiency of biological resource usage are analyzed. The results show that (1) the EF deficit of Wutongqiao in 2003 was 2.001 hm2 per capita, which means that the local EF in terms of human activities had already exceeded the benchmark of the carrying capacity of the ecosystem Therefore, the structure and function of the local eco-economic system must be adjusted accordingly. (2)The structure of EF supply and demand of Wutongqiao was obviously asymmetric and the ecological space-types for human consumption were not diversified enough. (3) The presence of per capita ecological deficit revealed that the relationship between man and land was becoming increasingly intense.
