The density and the quality of the transport and commercial systems of a nation can contribute to strengthen its political identity. The role of these infrastructures is not only to facilitate the movement of millions of people but also to redefine the real and imaginary geography of regions in order to transform them into coherent human groups. The development of the road and railway networks, as well as the growth of air traffic, brought about in China as in France the construction of new infrastructures. Beyond the specific technical skills of railway and aviation, the interface between cities and the means of transport are places where a lot of architectural thought has been given. Today, stations and terminals are complex buildings which unite the function and the rites associated with transport, the inevitable presence of shops and the pleasure of travel, where the sensitive perception of the train or the plane can no longer be neglected. The transport interchanges thus became real gateways to cities and are even actively part in their new identity. Bridges are the noticeable elements of the transport networks which have not only benefited these last few years from considerable progress in techniques and materials, but are also reinvested with a renewed interest by designers and the public. Today, the architectural and urban dimension of the bridge is recognized through many structures which reconcile technical performance, plastic quality and user value whether it is in the field of the road or motorway bridge or that of bridges for the high-speed trains where, over the last twenty years, France has built up a reputation for excellence.
