Certain materials have particular physical or chemical pro-perties. These materials include optical fibers, piezoelectric ceramics andpolymers, shape memory alloys, electrorheological fluids, etc. An intellig-ent material system composed of such materials can sense its environment,transmit information, and response to it by adapting to the changing envi-ronment or giving warning signals. Some applications of the intelligentmaterial system are discussed in detail in the cases of bridge and aircraft.
