Zhouyiinscribed on the bamboo slips of Chu collected in Shanghai Museum witnessed the existence of the marks of line by numbers of six (symbolizing Yinlines) and nine (symbolizing Yanglines). As the same as the marks in other transmitted versions of Zhouyi, these marks adequately revealed the most complicated circumstances of transformation without any fixed rules conceived in the hexagrams, and the same complicated circumstances of the transformations between the hexagrams, by which the prospect for the complicated cases of interaction and transformation without unchangeable regulations between the two forces (of Yinand Yang) and that for the same complicated transformations between the cases were adequately symbolized. The lines of the hexagrams in Zhouyion the bamboo slips of Chu had been fully symbolized. But the symbolized lines ought to have come into being in the Western Zhou Dynasty, when the Text of Zhouyihad been completed. These signs were indeed the foundation for Zhouyito possess its unique language system conceived with highly philosophical correlations between heaven and earth. The special (red or black) square marks after a hexagram and the remarks affiliated to the top line revealed the principle of that things will develop in the opposite direction when they become extreme, under the circumstance of which new transformations will begin. But the regulations for the division of chapters are still difficult to be interpreted.
