The two symbols in the Book of Changes (the Book), i.e. Sun (approx. decrease, restrain or abase) and Yi (increase, enhance or benefit), were greatly extolled in the antiquity. In the ancients' eyes, they could gracefully embody the ideology of ”changes to the times” and ”advance with the time”, a highly generalized conception of ”time” in the Book. They suggest the way to which a sovereign adheres what ”restrains the upper but benefits the lower” or ”be modest to the lower”, and the way a man of honor follows to stay away from damage and danger. They also instantiate Confucianism for the value pursuit of perfecting oneself for virtue to elevate the spiritual height. Moreover, they typically speak for the principle of how the universe operates and the essentiality of the theory articulated in the Book. Therefore, the principle of Sun and Yi, as is basically presented by that ”one Yin and one Yang constitute the Tao” in the Commentaries of the Book, could be abided by to ”look into the changes of the universe” and ”reflect on gain and loss”. That is the key reason why the two symbols were by the ancients so highly praised.
