Alpha1-adrenergic receptors (ARs) mediate some of the main actions of the natural catecholamines, participate in many essential physiological processes, such as sympathetic neurotransmission, cardiac contraction, control of vascular tone, modulation of hepatic metabolism, and regulation of smooth muscle activity in the genitourinary system. This article reviews the recent progress in subtypes, subcellular localization and signal transduction of alpha1-adrenergic receptors, to provide insights into the pharmacological, physiological and pathophysiological roles of the alpha1-adrenergic receptors.
