Critical consensus seems to suggest that Herzog is Saul Bellow's best work that reflects a professor-intellectual's dilemma in our modern times. The author of this essay holds that Herzog's spirited resistance to the forces of reality involves a good deal of Apollo and Bacchus, the two distinctive immortals in ancient myths of Greece. F W Nietzsche sees the two mythic immortals as the representation of two distinctive agents of art, which he respectively termed as “illusion” and “intoxication”. This essay attempts to apply the two agents of art to the study of Herzog's contemplation for spiritual salvation, laying its focus on a new self-made spiritual identity.
