In 1978 a total of 54 tombs ranging in date from the Warring States to the Eastern Hanperiods were excavated at Xinqiaoshan and Heshanmiao in Yiyang county in northern Hunanprovince.Among them,25 of the Warring States period were situated at Xinqiaoshan,and22 of the Warring States period,7 of the Han dynasty were around Heshanmiao.Thesetombs produced over 700 objects. The Warring States tombs both at Xinqiaoshan and Heshanmiao were of the shaft type.Apart from a few narrower ones, they were rectangular, but measured a little wider. One ortwo were close to sqaure. Some were provided with sloping passages. The shafts were filledwith rammed earth.A few of them were paved with a layer of white clay. Both coffins andskeletons had long rotted away, providing no clue to burial systems. These tombs are iden-tical in shape with those of the Warring States period excavated in the Changsha area. The funeral objects comprise bronzes and pottery. The former included weapons—ko-halberds,spears,swords,ji-halberds and arrowheads,as well as bronze mirrors and shovels. The latter were dominated by round-bottomed bowls, jars, stemmed dishes,ding-tripods,dungrain container and hu wine vessels. Most of the Warring Sates tombs at Xinqiaoshan contained sets of weapons—ko-halberds,spears and swords. It can be surmised that this cemetery was one for warriors.According tothe form of the tombs at Xinqiaoshan and Heshanmiao and the relics they yielded, they canbe assigned to two stages. An early stage corresponds to the early Warring States period;a late stage to the period up to the seizure of Changsha by the state of Qin.The Western Han tombs were veritcal pits approached through sloping passages.Amongthe funeral objects, the most popular were grey clayey pottery.A large number of wuzhu coinsof unbacked clay for funeral use and coper wuzhu coins were also unearthed. The tombs ofthe Xinmang period yielded a number of huoquan and daquanwushi coins. The Eastern Hantombs, mostly brick-chambered,produced red pottery covered with green glaze. These tombs of the Han dynasty resemble those of the same period at the Changsha area.
